My Maxim & My Scientific Credo – Calmness, Empathy, Professionalism …
and for the experts among you: My own scientific credo was originally biological reductionism and functionalism (F. H. Crick, E. Kandel, C. Koch -currently number one in the worldwide ranking of neuroscientists-, G. Tononi) as well as behaviorism (I. P. Pavlov, J. B. Watson, H. F. Harlow, B. F. Skinner).
I come from a time when one – especially as a medical doctor – still had to complete analyst training to work as a psychotherapist. Back then, I also had to undergo a so-called self-analysis. The training lasted five long years.
I worked during the day in intensive care medicine and administered anesthesia (“drove” anesthetics) because that training had to be paid for privately at the time. It initially cost 20,000 DM, and later even more.
One of my teachers in depth psychology was Eugen Drewermann, one of two very great analysts (luminaries) we had in Germany back then. At that time, he was known to all viewers through media, radio, and television (e.g., Maybrit Illner) and only trained five private students.
I spent my school years at the boarding school and high school “Collegium Augustinianum Gaesdonck” near Goch on the Lower Rhine. After that, I completed training as a male nurse and subsequently worked as an operating room assistant (surgical assistant) in a hospital in Isselburg-Anholt – assisting in 548 operations as the second sterile assistant, primarily in general and abdominal surgery.
